Asian/Australian Values Workshop

Highlights from the Asian/Australian Values: New Directions in Australian Literature Workshop
I attended this workshop along with Tom Cho courtesy of Wenche Ommundsen and Alison Broinowski who brought together writers, publishers and academics to discuss Asian/Australian Values. Much was quoted from the current Griffith Review issue “In the Neighbourhood”, which featured articles discussing translation and “contamination” as a way of literary cross-pollination.

Language – an audio composition by Josh Goldman

Josh Goldman is a composer / improviser / guitarist / educator who resides in the United States. He composes / improvises / performs music, using acoustic and electronic sources, for various ensembles and settings. Much of his music combines sound and visual elements (film / video / various installation spaces). His compositions and performances have been heard and awarded internationally. Mr. Goldman holds degrees from New England Conservatory of Music (BM in music performance) and Brooklyn College, CUNY (MM in music composition).

Silence

“Silence” is a play about three generations of Vietnamese women haunted by the spectre of one man. Their silences hold the secrets they hold from each other and the wider community. Based on true stories from Vietnamese women the play will be performed by Australian Vietnamese Youth Media in 2008 in Melbourne.

Peril is a new Asian-Australian website designed to build a critical mass of Asian-Australian art and cultural concerns. Our ambition is to have two core issues a year on the site with a forum board for people to chat and comment. Why Peril? From the so called Yellow Peril that labelled the wave of Chinese immigration in the 19th century. We are perilious and take risks but not in the way that the Pauline Hansons of the world think!

Finding myself in fantasy

I was (I mean I am!) a big fan of fantasy fiction especially when I was younger. I wanted to escape from everyday reality, and fantasy provided the outlet. I also indulged in the odd game of Dungeons and Dragons, the latest game ran from when I was 30 to 32. This short essay will be a reflection on my racial identity and engaging with fantasy faction.
