Ve Nha Chua (Gone to heaven)

My grandfather saw devils, right before he died. “They’re here, they’re here!” he exclaimed to my mum and cousins, who were in the room at the time. His fearful eyes were wide open. My cousins splashed holy water in the corner where he saw the devils. My grandfather looked to the right, where a statue of the Virgin Mary stood. It was this image that he took with him. His eyes fluttered, body shaking. And then he was gone.

An Anecdote

It took me the most part of my childhood to understand how my mum could be Cambodian, but born in Vietnam, at the same time. She was born in Cambodia then moved to Vietnam. During the Vietnam War she worked as a telephone operator for the American government. Needless to say when the Communists won, they didn’t like my mum very much. They put my family in one of the re-education camps.
