Welcome to the second issue of Peril – themed “Heroes”.
We certainly have got a diverse range to offer you this time around, from the Vox Pop that Tseen has composed exploring people’s ideas on heroes, to individual musings on people’s personal heroes, a sound recording of ninjas and lots of poetry!
We have touching pieces by Helen Huynh on her mother, Phillip Tang on his father and Leslie Cheung, and a piece dedicated to the late Lisa Bellear to name a few. We are also privileged to be publishing scenes two ...

When I first thought about contributing something for this issue of Peril, I did it with an eye towards amalgamating nifty pop culture moments and oh-so-clever intertextual references involving KITT, MacGyver and Fu Manchu.

The more I thought about the theme, though, the less this seemed to fit. For a start, I had a dilemma about what a hero actually was. Was it a role-model (i.e. you want to be like that person/character), or was it someone you wouldn’t mind hanging with because you thought they were über-cool?{mosimage}

One of my role models… encounters with Lisa Bellear

Heroes can be anybody; they can come named or anonymous, queer or straight, black or yellow, know martial arts or ride an old cranky bike. Having heroes has enabled me to see beyond being isolated and alone in a money-making scarily racist world that loves tokenising the non-white and the non-heterosexual as part of a charade of inclusivity and generosity. One of my biggest heroes is poet and photographer and community radio broadcaster – the late Lisa Bellear, who passed away in ...

I was very young when my obsession started; sparked by the cartoon version, it intensified with the television series. Every weekend I’d be rendered speechless from the first bars of the intro to the closing credits as I watched in awe, stretched out flat on my belly on the lounge room floor.

Every year, I’d get the show bag from the Royal Easter show, and when we got home I’d sneak up onto the garage roof and fight off make-believe villains whose faces always ended up resembling those of my brothers. ...

A poem of word, monologue and dialogue. A poem of movement, song and music. It is a poem of performance. Yellow is not Yellow is about myself and is not about myself. It is about my friends but it is not really about my friends.
It is about life and death and it is not about life and death at all.

Yellow is not Yellow is not really about anything, but it is about lots of things. Things that always exist in the past, in the present and in the future. Things ...

My father had this sixth sense. He knew when people would die.

We were watching a Leslie Cheung film together—a Wong Kar-Wai one with swollen colours, Happy Together—and my father was enthralled, totally outside himself, his small feet embracing the seats in front of us. In the dark of the Chinatown cinema, he massaged his wrists.
Leslie’s character was bleeding in an old lover’s doorway.
Without warning, the sound of sobbing leaked through the warm air of the cinema. At first, I thought it was one of the girls in school uniform, hugging ...

April 23rd, 1977. Almost two years after our defeat. Kim was only nineteen as he stood there on the dock, dazed and startled at the reality and unreality of what he was about to leave behind. On his left hand, a golden ring. 24 carats, slightly chipped; a family heirloom. He brought only what ...
