Just like you I am also an Indian Goan Australian born In Australia, although I am not queer ha ha. I share your experience growing up in Melbourne where I was bullied and racially differentiated as a young child from what was considered the norm. I would especially feel the racism when white Australians would automatically ask "how many years I've been in country? Like because of my skin I must automatically be completely foreign, 'can't they tell by my accent' man it is so frustrating! I feel the only way I can deal with this is if I staple my passport to my forehead so no one has to ask that stupid question again.

Anyway on another note I wonder how many Australian born Goan Indians exist worldwide? It must be a really small group

Indeed. In fact, to quote the article:

"But it’s also true that more educated and genteel people are better at obscuring their prejudices than the uneducated. Knowing how to use politically correct terminology, or knowing when to keep your mouth shut in certain company, does not mean someone is less racist."

So perhaps next time read the whole article before leaving an outraged comment.

You kidding me? A certain "strata" of society? Racism pervades on ALL levels of Australian society. Jesus be honest, OK? It's just that the rich and well to do folks have more to lose, so they don't just outright blurp out racial remarks whenever they want. Most of them can barely contain their displeasure when they see a non-white.

Hi Juliana, finally got a chance to read your piece in Overland properly - there was so much in there I related to wholeheartedly. I'm sure I'll revisit what you wrote again in future. And thanks for sharing your family practices around naming, all really interesting. And yes, maybe I will go by Lady Bird as a moniker ;)
